Country comparison
Sweden vs Denmark: the comparison that actually matters
Forget headline tax rates. The only meaningful comparison is how much money is left in your account at the end of the month.

Sweden and Denmark are close enough that people compare them casually and different enough that casual comparisons are usually wrong.
Two similar systems produce different outcomes depending on where you live, where you work, whether you have children and how far you travel. Averages hide all of that.
This is why Øresund Life does not publish a verdict. It takes your salary, your housing situation, your household and your commute, and models both sides on the same basis.
The output is one number you can act on — the monthly difference in disposable income — plus a breakdown of what is driving it.
Tax systems
Municipal plus progressive state tax on both sides, with different allowances and thresholds.
Housing markets
Usually the largest single difference between the Swedish and Danish sides.
Family benefits
Child allowances exist in both countries but at different levels.
Pension
Occupational pension structures differ significantly and are shown separately.
Run it on your own numbers
Five short steps — salary, home, commute, household — and you get one monthly figure for each side of the strait, with the full breakdown behind it. Free, no account required.
Common questions
Are salaries higher in Denmark than in Sweden?
Danish salaries in the Copenhagen area are often nominally higher than Swedish equivalents, but nominal salary is a weak comparison across a currency border. What matters is disposable income after tax, housing and commuting.
Is tax higher in Sweden or Denmark?
Both systems combine a local rate with a progressive state element, and the totals are closer than the stereotypes suggest. The more useful question is which system applies to your income given where you live and where you physically work.
Which country is better financially?
There is no general answer — only your answer. For a Copenhagen salary, the outcome usually turns on housing costs and the commute rather than on tax alone.
