Frequently asked

Living in Sweden, working in Denmark — your questions answered

The rules that actually decide your outcome: where you are taxed, how much you can work from home, what the commute costs and what happens to your pension.

Tax across the border

Where you pay, what changes when you work from home, and how the Øresund agreement works.

If I live in Sweden and work in Denmark, where do I pay tax?

As a rule your salary is taxed in Denmark, because that is where the work is physically performed. Sweden still taxes you as a resident but gives relief for the Danish tax, so in practice the Danish level decides what you pay on the salary. Sweden remains relevant for other income, wealth-related rules and for benefits.

What is the Øresund agreement and the 50 percent rule?

The Nordic tax treaty has a special Øresund provision: you can keep Danish taxation of the whole salary even when part of the work happens in Sweden, as long as at least half of your working time in each three-month period is spent at the workplace in Denmark. Work done at home in Sweden or on business trips outside Denmark counts against you. Fall below that level and the days worked outside Denmark are taxed in Sweden instead, which usually means two tax returns and a different net result.

How many days can I work from home in Sweden?

Roughly two days a week is the practical ceiling for most people, because the test is measured over rolling three-month periods rather than as a yearly average. A heavy home-office month can be balanced by an office-heavy one, but only inside the same period. The calculator flags the point where your remote pattern would push you over the line.

What is AM-bidrag?

The Danish labour market contribution is 8 percent, deducted from gross salary before income tax is calculated. Every other Danish tax and allowance applies to the amount that is left after it, which is why the effective rate on a Danish salary is not simply the sum of the headline rates.

What is top tax, and the new toptopskat?

Denmark charges an extra state tax on income above a threshold. From 2026 the top layer is split, adding a higher band for very high incomes on top of ordinary top tax. A tax ceiling caps the combined state and municipal rate, so the marginal rate does not grow without limit.

Do I have to file a tax return in both countries?

Usually yes. You file in Denmark on the salary and in Sweden as a resident, where you claim relief for the Danish tax already paid. If you work enough days outside Denmark to break the Øresund rule, part of the salary is actually taxed in Sweden and the two filings interact more closely.

Commuting and deductions

Train, car, bridge and the Danish travel deduction.

Can I deduct my commute in Denmark?

Yes. Befordringsfradrag under the Danish tax rules gives a deduction based on the round-trip distance between your home and your workplace, regardless of how you travel. The first stretch of each day's journey gives nothing, the middle band gives the full rate per kilometre and long distances give a reduced rate. Crossing the Øresund adds a separate fixed deduction per crossing for the bridge or the train.

Is it cheaper to commute by train or by car?

For a daily commuter the train is normally cheaper once bridge tolls, fuel, wear and Copenhagen parking are counted, and the gap widens if your workplace is not near free parking. The car wins mainly on flexibility and on unusual routes. The calculator prices both from current tariffs, including the commuter discount schemes on the bridge.

How much does the Øresund bridge cost for commuters?

The list price per crossing is high, but commuter agreements cut it substantially, and the more crossings you make in a month the lower the effective price per trip. We read the published tariffs and show which figures come from the live source and which are the last published values.

How reliable are the Øresund trains?

Frequency is high across the strait for most of the day, and typical delays are small, but disruptions cluster around weather, signal faults and border checks. Our train page shows the live departure board and the share of departures within five minutes, plus rolling averages for the last week, month and year.

Salary, currency and cost of living

What the salary difference is actually worth once you spend it in the other country.

Is it worth working in Denmark and living in Sweden?

For most people with a Copenhagen salary, yes, because the salary is earned in the stronger currency while rent and everyday costs are paid on the Swedish side. The gain shrinks if you commute far, pay for parking, or lose Danish deductions by working mostly from home. The honest answer depends on your salary, your household and your commute, which is exactly what the calculator models.

How much more do you earn in Denmark than in Sweden?

Across comparable roles a Danish salary is typically well above the Swedish equivalent in the same field, before tax. We model the Swedish counterfactual with an explicit ratio rather than pretending the same number would be offered on both sides, and you can see and change that assumption.

Which DKK to SEK exchange rate do you use?

We use the European Central Bank reference rates, fetched live, and we show the date of the rate that produced your result. The exchange rate page also plots the last one, five and ten years so you can see how much of your margin is currency rather than salary.

Is housing really cheaper in Malmö than Copenhagen?

Per square metre, yes, in both the rental and the ownership market, and the difference is large enough to change what kind of home you can afford. Ownership costs differ structurally too: Sweden gives interest relief on mortgages while Denmark charges a property value tax, so the comparison is not only about the price tag.

Pension and social security

Where your retirement money accrues when your work life crosses a border.

What happens to my pension if I work in Denmark?

You are covered by Danish social security while you work there, so you build Danish public pension and ATP rather than Swedish public pension for those years. Occupational pension depends on your Danish collective agreement or contract. Nordic coordination means the years are not lost, but they are paid out from the country where they were earned, on that country's terms.

Do I get a Swedish pension if I live in Sweden but work in Denmark?

Living in Sweden alone does not build income pension, since that follows the income you are taxed on in Sweden. Guarantee-type benefits depend on residence years and are means-tested against your other pensions, including the Danish ones. Our pension comparison shows the projected total from both systems side by side at your chosen retirement age.

Should I save privately if I commute?

Very often yes. Danish occupational pension contribution levels vary far more between employers than the Swedish collective standard, so a strong salary can hide a weak pension. Comparing the projected outcomes for both scenarios is the fastest way to see whether your extra net income is quietly being borrowed from your retirement.

About the calculator

How the numbers are produced and what they are not.

Are the results official or legally binding?

No. They are estimates built on published rules and rates, meant to help you understand the structure and the size of the differences. Every rate is labelled with its source and effective date, and anything unverified is marked as a configured assumption. For decisions, confirm with Skatteverket, SKAT or Øresunddirekt.

Do you store what I enter?

Only with your consent, and only in anonymous form to understand which scenarios people calculate. You can decline in the cookie banner or switch it off at any time on the privacy page, and nothing is tied to your identity.

How often are the rates updated?

Tax parameters are reviewed against the official rules for each tax year, exchange rates are fetched live from the ECB, and commuting tariffs are read from the operators' published prices with a fallback to the last known values when the live source is unavailable.

Answer it with your own numbers
